Dennis on a pack of Players
Cigarette Packet

The "world's naughtiest boy" was born in 1951 on the back of a cigarette packet. When the comic's editor George Moonie heard a music hall song with the chorus "I'm Dennis the Menace from Venice" and ordered a character to fit the name.

(March 1951- May 1951)

The first Dennis design lacked his famous striped jumper and instead sported a plain white shirt and a striped necktie.

(May 1951- September 1951)

When David Law drew Dennis in March, his clothes looked a bit plain, and the only stripes were on his necktie. So, in May 1951,

Dennis was given black and white stripes. It would be three months till he would get red added on to his jumper.

(1951-1953)

In May 1951, Dennis sported his famous striped jumper. In September, Dennis got a splash of red added to his distinctive jumper.

The Beano (1953) Dennis now has less hair and has no longer got his round nose. He also has thinner stripes for his jumper.

Dennis now has bigger arms and a bigger face.

Dennis has now become taller, with a childish face.

(1960-1971)

Dennis has now considerably shrunk in size, and is given a meaner look.

He now has bigger eyes, a more bulbous nose and a broader chin. His mouth also is more joined to his nose.

Around 1964, Dennis becomes slightly taller.

(1980-1993)

Dennis now changed drastically. Now he looks older, with a thuggish body and a mean look, keeping the grin behind his nose. Also, he now has fair skin.

Dennis is now given a minor change in his look, appearing more childish, his eyes are bigger, his grin is no longer behind his nose, and his body is a little smaller.

The Beano (1995-1998) On some rare occasions, Dave Sutherland drew Dennis with his grin behind his nose.

(1998-2003)

In the David Parkins era, Dennis mostly kept his looks, but his eyes are now slightly bigger, and his mouth is again joined to his nose.

In the Nigel Parkinson era, Dennis had a more "cartoony" look.

(2009-2010)

For the new animated series that year, Dennis' look changed drastically. He is now more cartoony and not menacing, and he now has 4 fingers instead of 5. This design was integrated into the comic, until around 2012 when the show had been on hiatus for a couple of years.

The Beano (2012-15) Due to the show being on hiatus, Dennis was reverted back to his old style.

(2013-14)

A refined version of his previous 2009 look was implemented into the 2013 series.

Beano (2015-present) Dennis now has a longer face, and the grin is not joined to his nose. His shoes have also been simplified since.

(2017-2021)

For the new television series, Dennis' look changed. He now looked more human-like and had a communicator disguised as a rocket

badge on his jumper. This design is only used on television.

Beano #3964

(2018, Save the Children cross-promotion)

Dennis wore a Gnasher jumper to help Save the Children. This outfit has appeared numerous times in Christmas-related releases since, but not tethered to the Save The Children Campaign.
